Your first TikTok Ads campaign for a Romanian SME: a guide without wasted budget
Choosing the objective, creative that fits the platform (native, first 2 seconds, sound), Spark Ads, pixel and events, the test budget — and when TikTok is not the right channel.
The situation
You run a natural cosmetics brand, a furniture showroom or a bakery with delivery across town. Your competitors are already on TikTok, with handheld clips that collect comments. You have a 45-second corporate video from last year and wonder whether it is worth putting money behind it. Short answer: not behind that one. TikTok Ads works, but by the platform's rules, not television's.
Step 0: is TikTok the right channel?
Before any budget, an honest check. TikTok works well when:
- the product can be shown in 15–30 seconds — a transformation, a before/after, a demonstration, an unboxing;
- the price allows a quick decision, or you have a cheap intermediate step (lead, booking, sample);
- you can produce native video content consistently — at least a few new clips a month;
- your audience is on the platform. It is no longer just teenagers; but if you sell industrial machinery to procurement directors, you have other channels.
TikTok is not the right channel if: nobody can film and you do not want to appear on camera; the product has a long, strictly B2B sales cycle; the test budget is so small you cannot reach conversion events within a week. Two months on one channel beats two weeks on five.
Step 1: the objective
In TikTok Ads Manager you choose the campaign objective. For an SME with a website, the ones that matter:
- Website Conversions — you optimise for an event on your site (order, form). The default choice if the pixel is installed and you have volume.
- Lead Generation — an instant form inside the app. Good for services, with a fast follow-up call.
- Traffic or Video Views — only as a preparatory step, to build retargeting audiences or when the pixel has no data yet. Not as the end goal.
There are also automated campaigns (Smart+), where the platform decides targeting, budget and creative combinations. For a first test, manual choices help you understand what is happening; move to automation once you have data.
Step 2: pixel and events
Without a pixel, a conversion campaign has nothing to optimise for. Install the TikTok Pixel through Google Tag Manager or your platform's integration, with the standard events: ViewContent, AddToCart, InitiateCheckout, CompletePayment for a store; SubmitForm or Contact for services. If you already run a GTM server, add the Events API (the server-side variant) for redundancy — the same principle as with Meta.
Verify in Events Manager, with the testing tool, that every event fires once and with the right parameters. The pixel loads only after marketing consent.
Step 3: the creative — this is where you win or lose
The non-negotiable rules:
- Vertical, 9:16, sound on. TikTok is consumed with sound. A clip designed to be silent is a clip ignored.
- The first 2 seconds. The thumb decides immediately. Open with the problem, the result or a movement — not the logo.
- Native, not an ad. Shot on a phone, with a person talking, with text on screen. The more it looks like feed content, the cheaper it is to get seen.
- One message, one call to action. "Order by Sunday" or "Book a consultation", not five benefits.
- Several variants. Three to five different clips per test, not one. The platform learns which one stops the thumb.
Step 4: Spark Ads
Spark Ads promote an existing organic post — yours, or a creator's who gave you the authorisation code — keeping the account, comments and likes. The ad looks like a post because it is one. For a Romanian SME it is often the best first campaign: post a few clips organically, see which one catches on without money, then put budget behind that one. Collaborations with local micro-creators fit here too.
Step 5: the test budget
There are daily minimums at campaign and ad group level — check them in your account, for your currency. Beyond the minimums, the rule is the same as everywhere: the budget must allow enough optimisation events in a week for the ad group to exit the learning phase (the platform indicates around 50). If an order costs 80 lei, a 50-lei-a-day test never learns. Choose a more frequent event or raise the daily budget for a short period.
An honest test: one ad group, broad targeting (Romania, the relevant age range), 3–5 creatives, 2–3 weeks, no edits in the first 5–7 days. At the end you have the answer: cost per event, which creative worked, whether it is worth scaling.
What to remember
- Check first whether TikTok is the right channel: a visual product, a quick decision, capacity for native video.
- The creative decides: vertical, sound on, first 2 seconds, native, one message, 3–5 variants.
- Spark Ads on a post that caught on organically is often the best first campaign.
- Pixel with standard events, verified, loaded after consent — otherwise there is nothing to optimise.
- The test budget must allow optimisation events within a week; touch nothing in the first 5–7 days.

Frequently asked
Do I have to appear in the clips myself?
Not necessarily, but someone has to. A real person talking or showing the product usually outperforms a text-and-music edit. It can be an employee, a happy customer or a micro-creator via Spark Ads.
How long should a test run before I decide?
Two to three weeks, with no edits in the first 5–7 days. Less than that means you are judging the learning phase, not the campaign.
